product description
TerraTonic Biochar for soil is a sustainable, carbon-rich material made from forestry residues. Created through pyrolysis, this biochar has a porous structure that provides a habitat for soil microbes, stores water and nutrients, and releases these nutrients as needed. You can expect to see an improvement in water usage efficiency, healthier plant roots, and improved microbial activity that supports plant requirements. Learn more about how our soil inoculants can defend against contamination, compaction, and salinity when you work with us to create your custom blend.
Improve water use efficiency by up to 20%
Significantly increase root biomass and length
Improve microbial activity to ensure optimal plant growth
Enhance soil health with retained organic carbon and nutrients
Reduce environmental impact with lower nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions
Decrease heavy metal presence for cleaner plants
This biochar for soil is made of 100% wood waste. We chose wood biochar because its high aromatic carbon content ensures better stability, resistance to microbial decomposition, and supports a circular approach.

Each farming method requires a unique application of biochar for soil. Follow these instructions for the best results.
- Potting soil benefits from a 10% biochar mix by volume.
- Trees and shrubs need a 10% mix of biochar by volume in the root zone only.
- Compost mixing allows for 10-50% of biochar mix by volume into the finished compost.
- Gardens and raised beds require mixing in one cubic foot of biochar in the top 4-6” of soil per 4 x 8’ garden bed.
- Co-composting with a new pile requires a 5-10% biochar mix by volume to be uniformly distributed. For an existing pile, add 3-5% biochar mix.
- Lawns require biochar seeding and maintenance to ensure efficacy. For seeding with organic lawn care products, apply one cubic foot of biochar to the top 2-4” of soil per 25’ and then rake the grass seeds into the soil. To maintain after aeration, continue spreading one cubic foot of biochar per 100 sq. ft.
TerraTonic Biochar Soil Conditioner can be integrated in a few additional ways. See the options below to decide if they’re appropriate to combine with the above directions.
- CHARGE THE BIOCHAR: Place the biochar in a container and saturate it with water. Mix in organic matter, plant nutrients, and microbes.
- BOTTOM LAYERING: For new planting or transplanting, add a 0.25-0.5” layer of biochar at the bottom of the hole, container, or bed.
- WATERING AFTER APPLICATION: Thoroughly water the compost materials or soil after applying biochar.
