Join the Movement to Turn Food Scraps into Rich Compost

May 3, 2024

Part of Jeden’s mission has always been to help environmentally conscious consumers keep food scraps out of landfills and transform them into soil-healthy compost. The Reencle Composter, our indoor home composter, is a small step that can make a huge difference in your kitchen and in your own backyard.

The Impact of Food Scraps in Landfills

Estimates are that food scraps constitute 24% of landfill matter. The goal is to reduce the amount of food scraps which rot in landfills and increase the amount of food scraps that are composted to benefit the environment. This will greatly decrease the amount of methane gas that’s being emitted from landfills.

SB1383 Legislation and Mandates

This is the purpose of SB 1383 and why we are mandated to separate food waste from other waste. From the individual consumer to large-scale commercial operations, we all want to positively impact the environment.

The Benefits of Composting

Imagine the food scraps your household accumulates each week, added to all the other households on your block, in your neighborhood, in your city, county and beyond. What if they could be transformed into nutrient-rich compost that enhances the soil in which our food is grown? They can. Home composting is one way, and this will also enhance home gardens when the material is put back into the ground to enrich the soil.

Current Practices in Ventura County

Food scraps from most Ventura County homes and businesses are currently separated from yard clippings and trucked all the way to Kern County to be composted, because Ventura County does not yet have any local facility permitted to compost the food scraps. However, that’s changing. Local waste management, recycling, and commercial-scale composting companies are investing big money to build the infrastructure needed to do so. Currently underway, this effort has a price tag of $30 million, largely funded through grants, and will take time.

Future Challenges and How You Can Help

It’s predicted, however, that even though the current projects underway will greatly expand composting capacity, it still will not be sufficient to handle all the county’s organic discards, nor the amount mandated by the state. We can all help by properly recycling our food waste. Take the extra few minutes it takes to handle food scrap waste properly. Be part of the rapidly growing movement to turn food scraps into compost. Be part of the movement to benefit the air and the earth.
